Ad Reinhardt comics

Ad Reinhardt (1913-1967) was a New York based artist primarily known for his abstract “black paintings”. Besides painting, however, Reinhardt also created a large series of comics through (mostly) the 1930s-40s. His comic series “How To Look” deals with his ideas of how to read modern art. Robert Storr, a critic and artist, described Reinhardt as a master of  both painting and comics. Reinhardt was also a member of the American Abstract Artists (AAA): a group founded in 1936 of boldly abstract artists based in New York City which was also a predecessor to the New York School and Abstract Expressionism. The group exists today, with current members such as the aforementioned Robert Storr and Liz Ainsle, and past members including Lee Krasner, Lászlo Moholy-Nagy, and Richard Tuttle.

Reinhardt “believed in a philosophy of art he called Art-as-Art and used his writing and satirical cartoons to advocate for abstract art and against what he described as "the disreputable practices of artists-as-artists".
