Final Work:
Shower, acrylic on canvas, 30 x 40 inches
Shower was painted with the history of representations of women in art in mind through referencing traditional posing and painterly techniques of both historical and more contemporary or modern art. This work challenges the voyeuristic objectification of female bodies through an exposed figure’s rebellious, unapologetic gaze - one that is deliberately unclear in it’s direction at first glance, asking us to think about where (and how) we feel compelled to look at the other woman in the shower. Abstract images of menstruation visualize a more taboo aspect of sexuality in a way that is both beautiful and perhaps uncomfortable when considered alongside the awareness of the figures to the viewers presence. The piece inquires about the the infuriating aspects of what it is to live in a female body - not in it’s physical or sexual characteristics but rather how they are viewed and objectified by the surrounding world.
